If everything in your life were fine, you would not be searching for something else. You would not be reading this.
I do not say that to be harsh. I say it because most men talk themselves out of that feeling for years. On paper it is fine. The bills are paid. Nobody is complaining. So they push it down and keep going.
The feeling is a signal
Think about a pain that will not go away. Your regular doctor says you are fine. It still hurts. At some point you go get a second opinion, because you know something is not right.
That gut feeling about your work or your life is the same thing. It is a warning light. It rarely comes on for no reason.
What doing nothing costs
Staying put feels safe because it does not send you a bill. But it does cost you.
- Time. Twelve months from now you will be in the same place, a year older.
- Money. The business you did not start and the raise you did not ask for are both real numbers.
- Home. The people around you live with the version of you that is stuck.
It is rarely the market. It is rarely the timing. Most of the time it is us.
What to do with it
- Say it out loud. Tell one person the truth about what is off. Sometimes bringing it into the light is enough to change direction.
- Name what you want. Not the revenue number. The reason behind it.
- Take one step this week. Not a plan for the year. One step.
- Get in a room. Other men who have been where you are will see what you cannot.
Some problems take years to fix. Some take one honest conversation. You do not find out which kind you have until you stop pretending it is not there.
